aiim-logoOn Wednesday, October 23, the Zia Consulting and Alfresco team sponsored the AIIM Information Governance Seminar in Anaheim, California. As with the Chicago event we attended and presented at earlier this month, the seminar focused on strategies for managing information assets effectively while the amount of content being produced grows at an exponential pace. Over 100 professionals gathered at the Disneyland Hotel to attend the seminar.

The day started with a keynote presentation from AIIM’s President John Mancini based on AIIM’s latest research report on Records Management and Information Governance. The report takes a look at the risk profiles around electronic records, retain versus delete options, e-discovery issues, and the implications of social and cloud on RM policies.

After the opening presentation, multiple organizations sponsoring the event took the podium to discuss various topics around Records Management and Compliance. Some key points we took away from the event include:

  • Becoming a “Paperless Office” is still a mystery to many organizations… and the amount of paper used by many is still growing. We face a challenge in educating companies on automated solutions and demonstrating their value.

  • Cloud silos are found in numerous areas of Records Management and in some cases cannot be avoided. We believe we can help those organizations by implementing a functioning Alfresco hybrid architecture.

  • Mobile and social systems are required as part of an automated solution and are no longer a differentiator between providers. Companies must be able to tap into these systems without legal or regulatory exposure.

  • Compliance and audit risks are growing. Companies often ignore these risks because they are hard to deal with, but solution providers need to address these issues.

  • Simplicity and it’s implementation at companies will dictate entire careers in the coming decade.

  • IT needs to provide top line benefits to their business… and they are struggling to do it.

  • Getting rid of data is critical–old data is useless and very costly. One presenter from IBM called it “data obesity” and said it’s long term effects kill new initiatives.

In the afternoon, Zia’s CEO and Co-Founder Mike Mahon presented “Records Management Made Easy.” Zia provides Easy Records Management (Easy RM) Solutions that connect those who are creating content with the compliance process.  Easy RM incorporates the tools employees use on a daily basis, reducing barriers to implementation and widespread usage. Mike was met with a multitude of questions upon conclusion on his presentation. We look forward to continuing our discussions after the event.

More information about Zia’s “Easy” solutions can be found in recent Zia/Alfresco webinar recordings: Moving to Easy ECM – Migration Solutions with Alfresco and Easy RM for Government with Alfresco Records Management.
