The Zia Sun
The Zia Sun Symbol originated with the Zia Pueblo tribe and reflects a philosophy of the basic harmony of the universe. The figure is composed of a circle with four straight lines—the sacred number of Zia.
Four is embodied in the earth’s four directions; the year’s four seasons; the day’s sunrise, noon, evening, and night; life’s four divisions—childhood, youth, manhood, and old age. Everything is bound together in a circle of life and love—without beginning or end. Man has four sacred obligations, to develop a strong body, a clear mind, a pure spirit, and a devotion to the welfare of his people.
